Nothing could be harder than meeting his parent's expectations.
He was wrong.
The first year, Steven pretended he was alright. He flashed his bright smile around and stayed on the outside. People talked about their doubts right in front of him, and the man pretended not to be fazed. He wouldn't tell anyone that the words 'he's far too quiet to be a decent lawyer' or 'who is he anyway?' or 'his parents definitely didn't pass the right genes to him' kept him awake. Why would he? He was an outsider, lost in a world of ego-trips and backstabbing. All for fun. Steven's whole idea of chivalry and respect were shredded constantly. It was this first year of college that the man took up drawing again. He'd wander off somewhere close to the ground and in the shadows, and then he'd draw whatever he felt like. At first, it was just the trees around him, stoic and strong. Then it became the faces of the jeering classmates. Steven reached his true breakthrough on one of the rainy days in New England.
His drawings became a comfort, and somehow, Steven survived his first year. But he knew he couldn't do it any longer. Traveling to his parent's law office in Seattle's suburbs, he was greeted with a grand surprise party. Hugs and kisses enveloped him, and throughout the summer break, it became even more impossible to break his parents' hopes. Their proud smiles and casual questions guilted Steve into another year. A year that was even worse than before. Halfway through his first semester, Steven couldn't take it anymore. The disappointment in his professor's faces wasn't even close to as bad as the same emotion on his mother's face. It nearly broke his heart. If they'd been able to talk through their heartbreak, it most certainly would have. But it didn't stop Steven from getting a transfer to NHU.
After changing his major and moving, Steve's life has gotten a hell of a lot better. He even met someone who tolerated his presence more than most - Gabrielle. Honestly, she was quite a pretty one, but whatever optimism Steven had had before college was gone. He could stay friends with her as much as she wanted. It wasn't like he knew her well. He just knew that in all likelihood she was taken and that she lives nearby in some apartment much like his.
